ISLANDS IN THE STREAM

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhenever I am on my way to the island of Brac I feel such immense relief. Separating from the shore has a strong meaning and effect on our spirits – it is a sense of liberation only sea can give us.

Life on islands has completely different rhythm. It is peaceful. Days are slower. There is no rush and crazy traffic.

Only decision I have to make is whether to first drink my coffee or go for a swim.

In the past islands were cut off from the coast and in winter almost isolated. That isolation caused the development of characteristic and unique cuisine.

The main source of income was fishing and agriculture. Many people, however, in order to earn a living had to sail to far away countries which explains the rich variety of influences visible in their cuisines.

Adriatic sea has around 1185 islands and islets but only 66 major ones are inhabited. Some of them were established in ancient times: Hvar, Korcula, Vis, Zlarin, Krk, Rab, Cres, Losinj.. and have long tradition in architecture, art, habits, and food preparing.
